ICIGS 2025 Workshops
Archived workshop information from the fourth congress in Blantyre, Malawi, 4–6 May 2025. The brochures below preserve the material published for that event.

Workshop 1: 3D Printing for Surgery in Low-Resource Settings
Hosted by Global Surgery Umbrella (GSU). Participants learned to generate 3D printed anatomical models from patient CT scans using open-source software and an affordable desktop 3D printer. The models can support surgical guides, patient education and casts for bone implants.
Workshop 2: MASHAAL — A Unique Leadership Workshop for Healthcare Leaders
The original four-page MASHAAL leadership workshop brochure.
Workshop 3: Biomedical Engineering — Innovation and Sustainability
International expert lectures and hands-on activity explored sustainable biomedical innovation through the disassembly and analysis of a surgical tool. The hybrid workshop combined global contributions with local practical work. Co-leads included Pete Culmer, Priyansh Nathani, Tim Horeman, Jenny Dankelman, Lovemore Mkukuma, Rowland Mjumira, Brian Matovu, Dalitso Kathyola and Selina Machinjili.

Workshop 4: Gas Insufflation-Less Laparoscopy Surgery (GILLS)
The original two-page GILLS workshop brochure.
Workshop 4: Urology
The original two-page urology workshop brochure.

Workshop 1: 3D Printing for Surgery in Low-Resource Settings Workshop
3D printing is a promising and underused technology that can solve some problems related to access in surgery - especially in low resource settings. The workflow used in this workshop can be used in any setting regardless of the income level as long as a cheap desktop 3D printer can be provided. The technology allows to create a additive manufacturing laboratory anywhere. If the 3D models are transferred digitally, there will be less need for shipments because they will be manufactured on the spot.
This workshop aims to teach participants to generate 3D printed anatomical models from patient Computerized Tomography (CT) scans using open-source software and affordable 3D printer. The models can be used for various purposes including but not limited to creating surgical guides, patient education models and casts for bone implants.
Hosted by: Global Surgery Umbrella (GSU)
Workshop 2: MASHAAL - A Unique Leadership Workshop for Healthcare Leaders
Workshop 3 : Biomedical Engineering - Innovation and Sustainability Workshop
This workshop will combine short lectures from a range of international experts on Biomedical Engineering and Innovation, with hands-on activity to explore sustainable engineering in practice, themed around the disassembly and detailed analysis of a surgical tool. The workshop will use an innovative hybrid approach to combine global contributions with local hands-on activity. Outcomes from the workshop will be published in the form of a journal article.
The focus will be on sustainable biomedical innovations for surgery - a direct fit to the theme and ethos of ICIGS 2025
The workshop will be co-led by Pete Culmer, Priyansh Nathani, Tim Horeman, Jenny Dankleman, Lovemore Mkukuma, Rowland Mjumira, Brian Matovu, Dalitso Kathyola and Selina Machinjili
Workshop Format: Lecture/Presentation, Hands-on Training, Group Activities/Breakout Sessions with a max of 10 groups of 5 participants
(Date/Day) Timings: TBC, Half-day (3-4 hours)
Workshop 4: Gas Insufflation-Less Laparoscopy Surgery (GILLS) / Urology Workshop
